UK Break Dancing History – Big Stories from a Small Town
Breaking (BreakDancing) has a rich and diverse history in the UK, yet much of it remains undocumented. A small but passionate organisation from St Helens has been working to change that, uncovering the untold stories of Breaking pioneers who helped shape the scene.
Led by Powered by Hip Hop, this heritage project set out to document the journeys of UK Breakers, particularly in the North West of England, where Breaking culture thrived in the 1980s and beyond. On a small budget, the project has successfully gathered stories, interviews, and historical insights, bringing them together in an online heritage archive.
Many of the Breakers we researched had gone under the radar, not necessarily as competition winners but as community leaders, mentors, and innovators who passed down Breaking knowledge before the internet made learning more accessible. The project has highlighted how small towns like St Helens played a key role in the wider Breaking movement, linking communities, nightclubs, and crews across different cities.
With support from Sporting Heritage, this initiative has already had a huge impact, raising awareness, connecting generations of Breakers, and preserving this unique part of UK sports culture. Looking ahead to 2025 and 2026, we aim to expand the project, create a physical exhibition, and continue telling the powerful stories of Breaking’s past and present.
This is proof that big stories can come from small towns, and that every community has a history worth preserving
