Sport and Song Go Together - Keith Gregson

I am 75 and have had a lifelong passion for both music (including song and dance) and Sport. I
have written numerous articles and books on sport (See ‘Published Books and Booklets’ and
‘Academic Work’ sections of my website) and among the 200 plus songs I have composed
between 1968 and today a significant number relate to contemporary sport.

In 2020 Taylor and Francis published an article by me entitled ‘Sport and Song Go Together – A personal reflection on the art of the sporting balladeer’ based on a ‘singing talk’ I gave at Leeds Beckett University. Both song and article research gave me the opportunity to draw together an interest in historic sporting ballads and to compare them with my own –in terms both of content and of purpose. In addition I give talks and advice at Family History Shows across the country – and am advertised as a Social and Sporting Historian.

During the pandemic one show went online and the organisers kindly arranged for my online talk on sporting ancestry to be preceded by a video of a related song. This can be seen on YouTube – ‘Sport and Song Go Together’ and ‘Gregson’ on YouTube.

Many of my songs (including sporting ones) went on YouTube during the Covid lockdown. Contact details can be found on my website and I am looking at putting a list there of some of the most popular (and interesting?) of my sporting songs.
