Sporting Heritage

The culture of sport is constantly changing; the faces we see on our TV screens, increasing opportunity to get involved in new sports, a growing representation of minority groups, innovative media, and greater opportunity for engagement. With a rapidly developing industry it is important to ensure that sporting heritage does not get lost in all the commotion.

The theme of this year’s Sporting Heritage Summit which took place at Glamorgan Cricket Ground, Cardiff, was resilience. How do we ensure that collections remain relevant and how do we continue to engage communities with sporting heritage?

At the Summit there were some fantastic presentations on how sporting heritage remains resilient because it reminds communities of their roots and memories – football memories are bringing huge value to the well-being of dementia patients across the UK. In Exeter, children are improving literacy skills by taking part in educational visits to Exeter City Football Club and learning about its heritage. In Rochdale and Oldham, people have been united by taking ownership of and presenting their heritage of Rugby League. These are only a few of the amazing projects that have been carried out by sporting heritage organisations.

Ensuring that sporting heritage is resilient means making sure it remains relevant, it helps us to remember how today’s sporting world was shaped and using its lessons we can continue to shape sport in the future for the better.

A special thanks to Glamorgan Cricket for hosting us!
