British Karting Heritage Project

Birgham, Scottish Borders, Scotland, TD12 4NG, United Kingdom

For over five decades, the motorsport discipline of karting has been the proving ground for the vast majority of drivers in Formula 1 and indeed professional motorsport today. But how many of today’s British kart drivers and future generations of racers have any knowledge about the sport’s origins and its development, or even have the ability to access the history of the sport?

Accordingly, an ambitious plan to “Give British Karting History a Future”, has been formulated in a concerted attempt to preserve and promote the history of kart racing in the UK for both current and future generations of karting enthusiasts. The motivation behind the ‘British Karting Heritage Project’ is a fear that most of today’s kart racers are oblivious about the sport’s humble origins and rapid development during its early formative years from 1960 to 1980, and indeed its evolution over the 67 years that kart racing has been established in the UK.

The concern is that today’s karting and motorsport enthusiasts simply do not have easy access to any meaningful British karting history, the vast majority of which, is now solely encapsulated within the pages of the sport’s two former print magazines from back in the day: ‘Karting’ and ‘Kart & Superkart’. Sadly, both these publications are now defunct, and typically, any surviving magazines are now only found languishing in the cupboards, lofts, garages, and workshops of former enthusiasts.

As a consequence, British karting history is currently hidden away & largely inaccessible to most of today’s young racers and that situation is liable to remain that way in the future too unless steps are taken now… before it is too late!
