Westminster School Archive

Westminster School Archive holds records relating to sport at the school dating back to the early 19th century. The content of these records covers the sporting activities of pupils while at Westminster School, as well as some fixtures for ‘Old Westminsters’ – our alumni – and our playing fields at Vincent Square.

Records take the form of photographs, trophies and numerous ledgers which record scores, individuals involved and commentary on matches, games and races. School ledgers are held on the following sports: cricket, water (rowing), football, athletics, fencing and tennis. Ledgers belonging to individual Houses at the school are also held, with reports of intra-school competitions. Team photographs from the 19th century to present day are held for upwards of a dozen sports. Oral history interviews, for which timestamped indexes are currently being prepared, also contain mentions of sport at the School. Published works on the school’s sporting history include: Rowing at Westminster from 1813-1883 (1890); Athletic Records of Westminster School (1898); and Fencing at Westminster School 1766-2013 (2013). A new history of rowing at the school is forthcoming.
