The ‘Sport’ collection of books dates from the middle of the 18th century up to 1972. The journals in this collection include several issues of ‘The Sporting Calendar’ and various editions of a journal listing horse races in England and Wales, both of these titles dating from the middle of the 18th century. Subjects include sport dictionaries, fishing, cricket and card games. The ‘Leeds United Collection’ is a collection of books and periodicals related to football, with particular reference to Leeds United AFC.
The Liddle Collection documents and preserves first-hand accounts of individuals who experienced the two World Wars. Within this collection are documented the personal memories of the football matches played during the Christmas truce 1914. The collection also contains the papers of civilians in Germany who were interred by law in the Ruhleben Camp near Spandau, Germany, 1914-1918. Within the papers are records of the sporting teams they created, including lawn tennis and football membership cards and rule books.
