Sheffield City Archives holds records relating to both Sheffield United Football Club and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

Sheffield United Football Club, also known as ‘The Blades’ (owing to Sheffield’s worldwide reputation for cutlery and steel production) was formed in 1889 . The club’s ground is at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, also known as ‘The Owls’ (so-called because the team played at Owlerton from 1899) was formed in 1867. The Club’s ground is at the Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield.

In addition, Sheffield City Archives holds original archive records relating to a variety of local, amateur sporting organisations. These include hockey, bowls, cricket, football, lawn tennis, swimming, archery and cycling clubs and associations. Typically, such records include minutes, accounts, reports, rules, correspondence, newsletters and scrapbooks.
