Sheffield Local Studies Library

Sheffield Local Studies Library holds printed and published sources relating to both Sheffield United Football Club and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.  These include programmes, fanzines, photographs, tickets, club histories, video recordings, newspaper reports, supplements and cuttings.

Sheffield United Football Club, nicknamed ‘The Blades’ (owing to Sheffield’s worldwide reputation for cutlery and steel production), was formed in 1889 . The club’s ground is at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, also known as ‘The Owls’ (so-called because the team played at Owlerton from 1899) was formed in 1867. The Club’s ground is at the Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield.

In addition, Sheffield Local Studies Library holds printed and published sources relating to a variety of local, amateur sporting organisations. These include hockey, ice hockey, bowls, cricket, football, lawn tennis, swimming, archery, cycling, rugby and basketball clubs and associations.  Typically, such sources include published histories, handbooks, year books, tournament and other programmes, brochures, photographs, certificates of achievement and news cuttings.
