Sporting Heritage Conference panel discussions

For this year’s conference we have four panel discussions which explore how sport and heritage intersect.

Across the discussions our speakers describe how a passion for sport and sporting stories cuts across ages and genders, countries and cultures. They demonstrate how sporting collections are vital to the understanding of how society changes and develops, how it can engender a sense of self and how it can be used as a lens through which we can examine bigger, wider themes.

Where is heritage in sport?

In this session our panellists discuss how and why they are using heritage to enrich their sporting organisations and outline their plans to develop this in the future to create a sense of place, draw on the inspiring stories from the past and attract new audiences.

Representing diversity in sport and sporting heritage

In this session our panellists make the case for recognising diversity in sport. From personal experience the explaining the power of having role models who share the same gender, ethnicity, background or physical ability as them has had on their lives and the how the achievements of diverse sports can no longer be viewed as ignored heritage.

Where is sport in heritage?

In this session our panel look at where sport and sporting stories fit within the collections of non-sport specific heritage organisations. They explore how sporting heritage can bring a fresh approach to the interpretation of other collections such as art, social history or science collections and is relevant to a wide range of agendas ranging from wellbeing to community cohesion.

Looking forward – challenges and opportunities for sporting heritage

In this session our panellists discuss how sporting and heritage organisations are changing the way they work in a post-Covid world. They explain how they are collecting and managing their heritage, are responding to changes in the volunteering and funding landscape and how they are sharing their sporting stories with new and existing audiences.
