Conference welcome from Dr Justine Reilly

A huge welcome to this year’s annual Sporting Heritage Conference. What a year it’s been! The inaugural Sporting Heritage Awards, the hugely popular Sport and Art Month, and a brilliant National Sporting Heritage Day has allowed us to share and celebrate the many and diverse sporting collections you so fiercely and ably manage. And it has demonstrated again that this sector is relevant, diverse, and ready to face the shifts and changes which come with the current political and economic challenges.

Sporting Heritage has been working hard to advocate for the role and value of the sector and increase awareness and understanding with stakeholders and funders. We’ve levered in further investment from the National Lottery Heritage Fund – a massive thanks goes to all National Lottery Players for their support! – and are in the process of ensuring our little organisation is fit for purpose and here to help you well into the future.

We know so many of those we support across the sector are struggling at the moment – whether it’s through finding the time and capacity to manage workloads, through access to funding and finances to support developing collections and working with audiences, or through finding the right support to make your ideas and plans happen. As a result, we’ve been listening to so many of you and have altered this year’s planned conference format to an online series of webinars. Free to access, and with a host of discussions, ideas, support, and knowledgeable panel member, we hope the conference will not only inspire and excite the next year of sporting heritage activity across the UK, but provide those of you working so hard to protect, preserve and share the nation’s sporting heritage, with renewed support to harness opportunities and navigate challenges to come.

All that’s left for me to say is once again, a big thank you!

Dr Justine Reilly, Director, Sporting Heritage
