'A Grass Green is the Proper Colour.’ Fashions for Archery 1781 – 1908

Thursday 26th June 2025
This free online talk hosted by The British Sport Art Trust discussed the clothes worn by men and women for the popular sport of archery from the founding of the Toxophilite Society in London in 1781 to the London Summer Olympics of 1908. It draws on paintings, prints, drawings and photographs, and the few surviving garments held by British public collections.
Edwina Ehrman is a dress and textile historian. She has worked for two of Britain’s leading fashion collections, at the Museum of London and most recently the Victoria and Albert Museum. Her expertise lies in the history of fashion, particularly British fashion from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since 2016 her research has expanded to include the development of new textile fibres and sustainable practice in the fashion industry.
The talk was part of a series of activities, and articles organised by The British Sporting Art Trust to celebrate #SportAndArt Month throughout June 2025.
