In Conversation with Stephen Bolton
In this episode, recorded in the run up to the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, we talk to Stephen Bolton, who discusses his research into the history of women’s football from 1914 to the late 1950s.
This includes the incredible story of his grandmother, Lizzy Ashcroft, one of the most influential and important pre-WW2 amateur women footballers (St Helens Ladies: 1921-FA ban + Dick Kerr Ladies: 1923-1935), and the subsequent creation of the Lizzy Ashcroft Collection.
Steve discusses the ban on women’s football and the ramifications that are still felt today, the significance of the Dick Kerr Ladies in the history of the sport, and looks forward to the UEFA Women’s EUROs in England this summer #WEURO2022
