In Conversation with Dr Fiona Skillen

In this episode inspired by the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 we’re joined by Dr Fiona Skillen, Senior Lecturer in History at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Fiona is currently researching the origins and early history of women’s football in Scotland, from the 1880s to 1939. The study is looking in-depth at the barriers and restrictions faced by the early female players, the role of the first World War, and the impact of the English FA’s 1921 ‘ban’ on organised matches. Fiona discusses how insights from the past have shaped and can help us to understand the development of the contemporary game.
