Who we are

Sporting Heritage CIC is a not-for-profit community interest company working specifically to support the collection, preservation, access, and research of sporting heritage in the UK and wider. We are the Subject Specialist Network for the sector and recognised by organisations such as the NLHF, MALD, NMGS, NI Museum Development and Arts Council England as the subject specialist organisation in the UK.

Sporting Heritage is built on a belief that sporting heritage allows new and different audiences to access their heritage, supports increased participation in both heritage and sporting activity, and provides a relevance to museums and wider heritage delivery by working with individuals and communities who often hold many of these collections.

We recently completed a Heritage Lottery Resilience programme which transformed the work of the CIC and put into place a fit-for-purpose governing body.  Our Director’s Board includes specialists from the sporting heritage sector and we have in place a number of networks and specialist advisers which inform the strategic direction of Sporting Heritage.

Everything we do is grounded in research, advice, and consultation with sporting heritage stakeholders including sports museums; those with significant sporting collections; those wishing to develop sporting collections and programming; sports clubs and governing bodies; policy and decision makers such as DCMS, Sport England, Arts Council England, and HLF; Higher Education Institutions; health and wellbeing experts; educationalists; a range of audiences; and, of course, those who don’t currently engage with the sector to understand how they could.

Sporting Heritage has extensive experience in delivering programmes and projects at strategic and delivery level in the heritage, media and sports sectors. We are currently developing our governance and finance structures to ensure we are even more resilient and ready to deliver our next three year business plan in support of the sector.
