Why and how to submit an application

Why should we get involved and what will it mean?

This is your chance to ensure that your community or sport’s heritage is recognised for its significance at national and international level. Although recognition on the inventory doesn’t bring with it funding or any commitment from the DCMS or UNESCO to support the collections, it does offer a huge opportunity to shout about intangible sporting heritage and its position as crucial and central to communities.

Submitting an application does not guarantee it will be included, but even the process of preparing the application will help with defining the specifics of your intangible heritage, why it’s significant, how you safeguard and provide access to it, and also what further things you may need or want to do to protect it.

If you need support with defining its significance, remember you can use our tool-kit here.

Who can submit an entry for the inventory?

This sounds far grander than it needs to! We’re not just looking just for national collections or for nationally significant collections that are already recognised (although of course they are absolutely vital to this project too). We’re looking for communities, heritage organisations, sports or types of sport, to develop their own entry about their living sporting heritage.

What will we need to provide?

You can visit the DCSM’s website here www.livingheritage.unesco.org.uk to view the expression of interest form and learn more about what’s needed. The main information you’ll need to provide is:

  • A detailed description of the cultural practice or tradition
  • Evidence of its significance and social importance
  • Information on how it is transmitted and maintained
  • Measures taken for its safeguarding
  • How you’ve consulted with the community represented

Everyone who submits an expression of interest, will need to confirm they have attended a Community Consent workshop. you will be able to either attend a pre-recorded session at a time to suit you, or a live session if you have specific questions.  Visit http://www.livingheritage.unesco.org.uk/ for more information.
