Last September a fantastic range of events and activity happened across the UK for National Sporting Heritage Day 2021. Find out more about some of the activities below.

West Boathouse Project, Glasgow – Play Like a Lassie

The West Boathouse Project in Glasgow worked in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University to run the Play Like A Lassie project, a community project to increase representation and knowledge of Scottish Sportswomen in the past through Wikipedia. They hosted online training sessions for volunteers who learnt how to edit Wikipedia and find out more about Scotland’s women’s sporting heritage.

Mothers and Daughters’ day at Lord’s

Lord’s MCC Museum

The Lord’s MCC Museum celebrated National Sporting Heritage Day with an open day for mothers and daughters to inspire, share and celebrate their bonds in cricket. Visitors had a chance to tour the ground, speak to professional cricket players and the curator of the ‘Evolution of Women’s Cricket’ exhibition. Visitors were also encouraged to record their own sporting heritage stories.

Friends of Hailey Park tennis session in NSHD 2021

Friends of Hailey Park, Cardiff

The Friends of Hailey Park used National Sporting Heritage Day 2021 to engage local people with the untold sporting heritage of Hailey Park in Cardiff, the legacy of Claude Hailey and in particular his passion for tennis. They shared with local people and schools the story of Claude Hailey, and Tennis Wales offered coaching sessions, all of which helps us re-engage with our community after the pandemic.

British Judo Association

The British Judo Association used National Sporting Heritage Day to launch an oral history campaign to capture the memories and contributions of the sports legends and international stars and their impact on the sport. They will aim to record at least 20 oral history recordings over the next twelve months.

World Golf Museum, Scotland

The World Golf Museum celebrated National Sporting Heritage Day 2021 by focusing on golf fashion, with family craft activities inspired by their costume collections. They also hosted an online lecture with Dr Fiona Skillen of Glasgow Caledonia University and Lauren Beatty, a Sporting Heritage CDP PhD candidate exploring the evolution of women’s golf wear in Britain 1890-1940.

Reading STAR – Supporters Trust at Reading with Reading Museum

The Supporters Trust at Reading FC and the Reading Museum worked together to celebrate the football clubs 150th anniversary in 2021. Fans brought their Reading FC memorabilia to Reading Museum on National Sporting Heritage Day to contribute to the museum’s Reading FC exhibition. They also invited fans to an inter-generational players panel event featuring present and past players who discussed their memories of the game.

Exhibition at the Tower Museum for NSHD 2021

Tower Museum, Northern Ireland

The Tower Museum in Northern Ireland built upon their previous National Sporting Heritage Day project to develop a new exhibition exploring the sporting heritage of their area.  They approached families of the area’s sporting heroes and asked them and the public, to share their stories through reminiscence sessions. The exhibition will tour to sports centres across Derry throughout 2022 so that as many people as possible can learn about their sporting heritage.

Para Dance UK

On National Sporting Heritage Day 2021 Para Dance Sport and Para Dance UK ran their first online inclusive day of dance to showcase different dance styles and Para Dance Sport. The day featured an online panel discussion exploring how young people can be inspired to take up Para Dance and the benefits of Para Dance for all.

Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation

Warrington Wolves ran a blended online and in person event for National Sporting Heritage Day 2021 including an online intergenerational session and an open day at the club to capture the stories of women in rugby league. They captured the oral histories of female players, including England’s Tara Jones, about their sporting heritage journey.

Expo’r Wal Goch CBC, Wales

Expo’r Wal Goch CBC hosted an online event in partnership with Dr Penny Miles and the Welsh Football Museum, Wrexham. The event explored the experiences of female fans of the Welsh men’s national team through photography and oral history and the place of museums in collecting and representing these stories.

Community Active CIC, Stockport

Community Active Stockport ran a project to collect the stories of the women and girls involved in sport in Marple, Stockport. They collected oral history, photos, videos and archive materials to create an exhibition which was launched on National Sporting Heritage Day.

Dartford FC’s Co-Chairman, Steve Irving

Dartford FC Community Programme

The Dartford FC Community team worked with their local community to discover, share and record sporting memories and experiences from primary and secondary school. They collected a variety of memories, starting with those of Dartford FC’s Co-Chairman, Steve Irving, and his memories of swimming at school. They used the memories collected to create an assembly presentation that was delivered in local schools on 30th September.

National Paralympic Heritage Trust

The National Paralympic Heritage Trust hosted a sensory workshop at the NPHT Heritage Centre on National Sporting Heritage Day. The activity day was supported by pre-visit material to help visitors plan their trip to the Heritage Centre. The National Sporting Heritage Day offer included a social story and a sensory map which described the visitor journey into their sensitively lit accessible museum space.

The cast of Battle of the Bath Masters

Arlington Baths Club, Glasgow

Arlington Baths Club was founded in 1870 and to celebrate National Sporting Heritage Day they created a short film ‘Battle of the Bathmasters’ celebrating the life of the first Baths Master, William Wilson and the untold story of his wife, Ruth, who gave lessons to female swimmers. The film was made by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers who came together to create the costumes, play the parts, and film and edit the final piece.

Yorkshire Cricket Foundation

Yorkshire Cricket Museum celebrated National Sporting Heritage Day by opening the museum to the public and hosting a cricket reminiscence session. For many, this was the first time they had an opportunity to attend in person since before the pandemic and join others to talk about and celebrate cricket sporting heritage.

Berkshire Cricket Foundation at Park House School

On 30th September England cricket player and World Cup winner Beth Morgan, visited girls at Park House School in Berkshire to help inspire the next generation of female cricket players. The students also took part in a new cricket resource created by Sporting Heritage  exploring the development of women’s and girls’ cricket.

Plymouth Argyle Heritage Archive

The Plymouth Argyle Archive celebrated National Sporting Heritage Day by hosting an evening of sporting memories with former BBC Football Correspondent and Plymouth Argyle fan, Mike Ingham. They also digitised more of their fantastic photography collection to add to their growing digital archive of heritage stories and created a new online exhibition celebrating their run to the FA Cup Quarter final in 2007. Looking Back CIC

To celebrate National Sporting Heritage Day  Looking Back CIC held a Rugby League reminiscence session at the home of Dewsbury Rams.  The day was a celebration of friendship and family who were able to come together in person after eighteen months of online sessions. Conversations were sparked by personal memorabilia and historic documents from the clubs archives.

Academy students photographing objects

Durham Amateur Football Trust

Durham Amateur Football Trust celebrated National Sporting Heritage Day by working with students from local school King James 1st Academy to explore the history of their most famous local amateur football team, Bishop Auckland AFC. They learned new creative and digital skills to produce an exhibition and learning resources that were enjoyed by older people from their community as well as their fellow students.
