Programme Objectives

Over the next three years, we will be working hard to deliver a project which:

  1. Has a focus on, but is not limited to, documenting and understanding the sporting heritage of women’s sport and disability sport;
  2. Supports NGBS and the clubs they work with to develop the knowledge and skills to collect, preserve, store, and share their heritage;
  3. Provides a collections map of heritage held by governing bodies of sport, their clubs, and their partners, with a particular emphasis on women’s sport and disability sports;
  4. Provides a digital toolkit of knowledge, advice and guidance to support all those working in the sports arena wishing to develop heritage activity;
  5. Provides a network of support and training to smaller and medium NGBS to engage the right support, knowledge and understanding to protect and share their own heritage;
  6. Advocates and celebrates the heritage relating to smaller and medium sized NGBS and the sports they represent widely and to new and different audiences.

Programme Outputs

The following outputs are key delivery strands of the programme:

1) Scoping Sporting Heritage – understanding, documenting, and raising awareness of the heritage held in sport Working predominantly with smaller and medium sized NGBS, the scoping will have two phases to understand where collections are held and their condition, and to develop a national map of sporting heritage in NGBS and sports clubs. You can help us in this by completing our collections survey.

2) Developing a digital toolkit – expert advice and knowledge at the fingertips of all NGBS and the organisations they support A key element of this programme will be to provide a digital toolkit, which provides NGBS and the clubs and organisations they work with easy to access, high quality, interesting and sustainable advice, information and guidance.

3) Creating a network – developing local support and long-term partnerships

To ensure that NGBS are not only supported in the short-term through the project but develop wider partnerships and knowledge locally to support their heritage activity, we will deliver a series of replicable workshops.

4) Sharing sporting heritage – uncovering and celebrating sporting stories to inspire current and future generations

We will also aim to ensure that, throughout the project, stories and collections are shared digitally and celebrated widely through securing a project sporting ambassador, creating a podcast and film series, and virtual exhibitions about the uncovered collections. We will also support the engagement in National Sporting Heritage Day from as many different organisations as possible, and finally we will create excellent education resources for use at Key Stage 2 and 3 which support the use of sporting heritage across the curriculum.
