#NSHD2019 - Rugby League...Keeping Memories Alive

Owen Simpson/Dewsbury Memories

Our project helps those who have a lifelong love of sport reminiscence and enjoy recalling their sporting and social heydays – even when they suffer from a memory loss condition – we use rugby league to connect people, start conversations and celebrate the good times.

I’ve enjoyed this video project as I now have a better understanding of the memory loss conditions our participants suffer from and despite a few bumps in the road I’m pleased with the result – it’s helping us explain Dewsbury Memories, what we do and our ambitions.

A lot of the people at memories club felt uncertain of being videoed for the project – we realised it might be a bit insensitive to ask to video them discussing their stories due to sadness and grief that may resurface. We also found that the pressure of a camera didn’t work too well when trying to interview members. So, instead of video interviews we opted with voice recordings and photos which have turned out well.

The Memories Club is a much needed support for families affected by memory loss illnesses – I’ve learned more about my Grandad’s condition and the support he needed. He loved Rugby League; he’d been a Dewsbury supporter all his life – I am too – so we could talk about that easily. Our film tells the story of my Grandad and the network of clubs we are setting up for people like him.
