In this panel discussion, recorded in the lead up to National Sporting Heritage Day 2024 we are joined by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, Paddle UK, and the Welsh Sports Association to consider, Just how important is heritage work to sport; it’s governing bodies, associations and clubs?
To start with, we asked the panel what the term ‘heritage’ means to them, and whether it’s actually the best term to engage Sport with. As even if ‘heritage’ is understood and considered, it’s all too often not seen amongst their priorities, with understandable concerns around capacity and capability being barriers to further involvement.
The panel consider some of the potential challenges and solutions, but also explore the real benefits and opportunities of working with heritage for Sport. With stewardship and responsibility also a vital consideration for the decision makers, along with the members and sporting communities who recognise the importance of heritage, and that we all have a duty to record and preserve the achievements from our sporting history before they’re lost forever.
